Ys I & II Chronicles is an enhanced port of the 4th remake of the first two Ancient Ys Vanished games.
When starting the game, you may choose two modes: Chronicles and Complete. It is irrelevant since it only determines character portraits.
You also have the choice of choosing which version’s music you want: the original PC-8801 music, Complete (1st remake), and Chronicles (4th remake). You will get none of the PS2 or NDS version here. For new players, I recommend Chronicles since it has the most rock in it. It can be changed in the Options Menu anytime.

The story is about the very first adventure of our young red-haired protagonist, Adol Christin, as he washes up ashore in the port of Barbado after his ship was torn asundered by the Storm Barrier surrounding the land of Esteria. To get the Shortsword from Slaff, you gotta TALK TO EVERYONE (and I mean everyone) or you’ll be defenseless until you get to Minea. You can spend your 500 Gold on a Shortsword at Minea though if you want to avoid this headache.

EXP Display –> To Next Level. It is good to know when you level up. Total just tells you how much you accumulated.
Wall Transparency–> Adol Visible In caves and plains with trees, they can and will block your character if you set this to Solid.
Monster Stats –> Display You don’t actually make use of this
until you consume a certain item you find in the plains areas.
This gauges your enemies’ abilities.
Blood Effects: On or Off. Your choice, really.

Nowonto Gameplay

The game uses the old bump system of Ys during the 80s before they went through the battle system overhaul in Ys V. It’s to honor the bump system of the older games.

You literally just bump into enemies, very simple. Hitting the front of the enemy will damage both you and the enemy while hitting the sides and back only damages the enemy.

The absolute best way to fight is to hit them at the side and continuously Run/Ram them to a wall until the monster dies. This is a legitimate tactic that I use all the time.

Magic and Skills do not appear until the second game. Adol is a true flesh and blood human. He gets all his fancy black magic and powers either from magical items of the past and present or transcendental beings from another dimension.
To obtain the power of magic, you have to offer the Rod of
Divinity to a Goddess Statue to gain the ability to wield magic.
Afterwards you must collect magical staves to obtain actual magic. These go from offensive Flame Magic and illuminating Light Magic to Transformation Magic.
