But it’s a lot more difficult than it sounds. You don’t just match 3 anything, instead, you need to consider that a specific dish might require you to match specific things. There are also add-ons like special pots that help you match 2 of a specific ingredient instead of 3. But then you might still have to pick up the ingredients from that pot and move them to another pot to continue cooking.
But if you’re not careful enough, you might not have sufficient space to combine ingredients from one pot to another pot and this could mean you lose the battle. And if this isn’t enough fun, you’re doing all of this while being timed. (And the time you spend hunting is part of your cooking time as well).Honestly don’t let the match 3 aspect of it keep you from trying it. The praise for this game is well-deserved. You get the gems by hunting for ingredients in the field. A given ingredient always has the same gems, though there's some randomness in what drops you get. As a result you have to consider what gems you're trying to get what ingredients have those gems on the map you're on How to best beeline for where those ingredients are and obtain them before rushing back.The combat and gathering is thus in service to the puzzle aspect, but getting better at it means you have more time for the actual cooking process.
It's also not always match three, certain cooking implements behave differently, like one that very slowly upgrades gems inside of it, and one where you can do match-4 with level 1 gems to get a level 3 gem. One of my favorite Switch games, Charming world and characters and the most addictive and fascinating combination of gameplay elements out there. The mental shift from fighting a dragon to get its ribs in the action sequence and then stirring it up with the puzzles to get the right amount of Flame element is awesome.My absolute favorite part is the judges critique towards the end though, I've prepared the same exact dish with slightly different elemental proportions and enjoyed how the review adjusted for that. Such an awesome game. To offer a different perspective, I think this game is just ok.
It's not bad, but it's not great.The art direction and voice acting are very charming, so that's a plus. I also quite enjoyed the puzzle mechanics. But what I don't like is the combat, which is an integral part of the game.
Combat is pretty shallow, and because you're on a timer to get your dish done, it feels more like a time waster than something you actually want to do.Let me explain. Basically, you enter a competition and must hunt for ingredients and cook your dish for the judges. But you don't do this in phases, you have to do it all at once.
That means you're dashing back and forth between the kitchen and the hunting grounds, and that kind of juggling felt like a bit much to me. It results in the hunting aspect being trimmed down to something simple enough for a tight time limit.As I played, I found myself wanting to end combat as quickly as possible and just get back to cooking. I might have preferred more fleshed out combat dungeons, where you take some more time to make your way through while fighting monsters and collecting ingredients. Maybe you'd have to cook some of your ingredients on the spot for healing or power, and you would then have to balance that between your limited inventory space and saving them up for the cooking competition later. I dunno, something like that.
The 'battle' part of the game needs to be fun, but it's not.As it is, I feel that hunting is a time wasting chore that takes away from the cooking puzzle mechanics, which are more entertaining. I don't have anything to complain about in that regard - cooking mechanics are fun, they did a good job with it.
The chef part is good, but the battle, not as much.If it's cheap and you find yourself interested, it's probably still worth picking up. Like I said, it's not bad. But I will say that I put the game down after finishing Mina's story, I didn't feel like continuing with the other characters. See, I thought having to juggle the combat and the cooking is what made the game work. Neither the combat nor the puzzles are really deep enough to stand on their own, but to me it's not a game about combat or puzzles, it's a game about multitasking on a time limit. When I'm in the combat part of the game, I'm not thinking the way I think when I play Bayonetta or something, but instead I'm hunting for whichever specific enemies will give me the pieces I need and thinking about the fastest way to kill it and get back to cooking, and since there's some randomness to the drops I have to think about what to do with my pieces on my way back.It's like.
Well, this isn't a perfect comparison, but it's kinda like Wario Ware. In Wario Ware, the microgames are all brain-dead simple individually, but they become fun when you play a bunch of them in rapid succession.
And the simplicity is what makes them work. If the microgames were too complex, it would be too hard to react and it wouldn't be fun anymore. Similarly, if Battle Chef Brigade made the combat more complex or put the puzzles on bigger boards, that could easily get overwhelming. And sure, they could have chosen to focus on one aspect or the other and fleshed it out into a full game.
But then that wouldn't have been the same game.
