Platypus Evolution Game Platypedia
Platypi are (probably) more closely related to birds than any other mammalThis is really misleading. I'm aware that says that the platypus' possession of a sex chromosome which is homologous to one of those present in birds suggests that, from their abstract,'This suggests an evolutionary link between mammal and bird sex chromosome systems, which were previously thought to have evolved independently.' However, it's important to note that Synapsids (which mammals are) and Sauropsids (which birds and reptiles are) diverged 320 million years ago. So, every other sauropsid that ever existed is more closely related to birds than platypuses are— every turtle, every lizard, every snake, every icthyosaur, every pterosaur, every skink, every mesosaur, etc. And these animals don't share birds' sex chromosomes.Saying 'the platypus has genes leftover from a common ancestor between reptiles and mammals' is one thing, 'the platypus is more closely related to birds than any other mammal, which is why they share characteristics' is another. But birds and platypi are more closely related than birds and any other mammalsI agree with.

This is simply not true. Mammals are, and therefore any two mammals, whether they be humans, platypi, bears, horses, what have you, are more closely related to one another than either of them is to any other non-mammal, where it be bird, fish, or bacteria.edit: here, for example are the TimeTree entries for,.
The divergence time for both human vs bird and platypus vs bird is just under 300 million years, whereas the divergence time for human vs platypus is only around 170 million years. I don't think was misinterpreting you. What you're saying is incorrect. Platypodes (or platypuses, if you prefer, but not platypi because the roots of the name are Greek and not Latin) are not more primitive and more closely related to any reptiles, including birds, than other mammals are. They're just as derived as therian mammals. All mammals share a common ancestor.
Mammals share a common ancestor with birds all the way at the base of Amniota, and it's the same common ancestor for all mammals. Otherwise the group wouldn't be monophyletic.Plus birds are nested way up in theropod dinosaurs, so I'm not sure where you're getting this from. That press release you're linking to does not say that monotremes are more closely related to birds than other mammals are. It says that some of the 'reptilian' traits are derived and some are ancestral.
That doesn't make a platypus more closely related to birds than other animals. When we talk about how related different species are, we are generally talking about the amount of time since they last shared a common ancestor. Mammals, including platypi, are a monophyletic group. Humans and platypi are equally related to birds, even if there is more genetic similarity between platypi and birds than between birds and other mammals.Edit: Here's an analogy: my brother and I are both equally related to my grandfather. By random chance, my brother and I could get different numbers of gene copies from my grandfather, such that 30% of my brother's gene copies may be inherited from my grandfather vs. Only 15% of mine.
This still does not mean that my brother is more related to my grandfather than I am, because degree of relatedness is determined by the pattern of ancestry, not genetic similarity. I also routinely build trees from sequence data. My analogy is not intended to be about taxonomy (although the process I described is analogous to incomplete lineage sorting, which is explicitly accounted for in coalescent-based phylogenetic inference), as what you are proposing is explicitly non-taxonomic. You are proposing that a single member of taxon A is more closely related to a separate taxon B than are any other members of taxon A.
This does not follow from any interpretation of taxonomy.Sequence similarity is used to build phylogenies, which tell us about the relationships of species. Although many features of a platypus look superficially similar to other animals, they are actually very different. A platypus bill, for example, has a sensitive magnetic field detector that it uses to find food, unlike a duck bill.
The venom of a platypus is chemically unlike any other kind of venom, and delivered using a poisoned spur- again completely unlike any other venomous creature. As close relatives of mammals (platypus are monotremes, not mammals), the sweating milk thing makes sense. Lactation works basically the same way, except mammals have gone an extra step of having nipples. The similarity in features to unrelated animals can be explained by convergent evolution: there are only so many ways of doing a job, and evolution often independently comes up with the same solution to the same problems. Webbed feet are very useful for a creature that swims, and there are only so many ways of making a working eye. There are only so many ways of making a working eyeActually, eyes are some of the most diverse organs around. The reason we know that eye features evolved independently so many times is that the eyes end up structurally quite different. Cephalopod eyes are not like arthropod eyes are not like vertebrate eyes, etc. There's a huge difference between simple eyes, compound eyes, and our complex lensed eyes.In short, there are a hell of a lot of ways to make a working eye, and that's amazing.
Eyes have evolved independently 40-60 times in evolutionary history. While all of these independently evolved eyes are different, they all use one of 9 basic optical principles (I've taken these figures from Climbing Mount Improbable by Richard Dawkins). All of these 9 types (eg pinhole lens, compound eye) have evolved more than once, and may represent the full set of practical ways to make an eye. In that case, there would be 9 basic ways to make an eye, which is still amazing. What I'm trying to say is that while there many be more than one way to do something, there aren't an infinite number of ways.
